SOCIAL SERVICES

Managing emotions and navigating the complex medical system.

Medical social services include addressing social and emotional concerns related to the patient's illness and care; helping the patient access community resources to assist in recovery; and counseling for the patient and family.

 

Medical social workers also help with:

  • Assessment of social and emotional factors related to patient’s illness and care

  • Counseling for home/family situations and to arrange for placement

  • Community resource planning

  • Short term therapy 

  • Conflict related to chronic of illness

  • Educating patients and families about illnesses and treatment plans

  • Conducting psychosocial assessments to identify mental or emotional distress

  • Counseling those in crisis or experiencing distress

  • Connecting patients and their families with necessary resources
